Its loyal readers exchange reports about local restaraunts and other foody things, and generally have a good time. la.forsale Want to sell a personal belonging? Post your ad here. It reaches a local audience, so people in New Jersey won't have to read about your car for sale. You should not cross-post a la.forsale message to la.general, or any other group than another *.forsale type group. This newsgroup is intended for Non-Commercial use only. la.general This newsgroup is for miscellaneous local-interest postings that do not fit more appropriately into another group. It is not for postings looking to buy, sell, rent, or trade anything. la.forsale and la.wanted are perfectly fine newsgroups for such postings. la.jobs This newsgroup is a great way for companies who are looking for, but not limited to, engineers, technicians, computing professional etc. to reach that market over a medium they use/promote. la.news Discussions on local newsworthy events. Well, that's what it was originally intended for. Now it shares space with automated postings about Usenet traffic. la.personals This newsgroup is the "Personals Section" of the "la.*" news hierarchy. It's for people of Los Angeles and the surrounding towns to meet each other. Orange & Ventura county people are welcome, too. la.test This is a group for posting test messages of no interest to others. la.wanted Want to find or buy something for yourself at home or work? Post your ad here. It reaches a local audience, so people in New Jersey won't have to see your ad asking for a nearby used TV. Suggested Newsgroup Creation Procedure ---------------------------- 1. Think again- are you sure there isn't already a good place for the messages your group is intended to carry? Will it get used? 2. Propose the newsgroup in an article posted to la.config (crosspost it to la.general, too, for now). Include - The proposed name (or names) for the new group. - The proposed "one-liner" for for the LIB/newsgroups file. - A brief description of the purpose for the new group, intended audience, reason for local distribution, and reason no exising newsgroup is appropriate. 3. Let other people have their say for a week or two. Gently try to win agreement for your idea; if news admins don't like it, they won't do it, and you need their cooperation. 4. Finally, if it seems like it's gone over well, go ahead and create it. Check out http://www.alumni.caltech.edu/~dank/la.config for pointers to technical info on doing this, and ask for help if you need it. You should probably look for people who maintain lists of the la.* groups, and ask them to update their lists to include the new group. http://www.alumni.caltech.edu/~dank/us.config might be helpful in finding such lists.
