STEPHENSON is a common English name. My Stephensons immigrated to the U.S. from Yorkshire in 1877/78. It seems that the Yorkshire Stephensons, who are themselves numerous and by no means closely related, probably came orginally from Scotland. George Stephenson, the inventor of the locomotive, is no doubt the most famous of the Yorkshire Stephensons. My Stephensons came from the West Riding Yorkshire village of Burton Leonard, migrated to the coast and became ironstone miners near Guisborough.
