Real Places That I Would Send Friends To:

  • Mt. St. Helens

One of my favorite hikes was up the south side of Mt. Saint Helens in the state of Washington. A combination of the Forest Service sign alerting you to that day's level of volcanic activity and the crumbling crater at the top made the geology feel much more immediate than, say, being told that "a glacier thousands of feet thick once lay over Rochester, NewYork."

  • Lassen National Park

Another volcanic place, distinguished by its relative unpopularity and the ease with which one can find one's own pond.

  • The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England.

Having never been to Pitcairn Island, I'd always subconsciously thought of "The Mutiny on the Bounty" as fiction in the vein of the Horatio Hornblower series. So, actually seeing Captain Bligh's sword was an unexpected surprise.

  • The Old Stage Road

A very pleasant ramble from San Gregorio to Pescadero, California.

  • Mission Peak

An excellent hill run above Fremont, CA.

  • The Fontainebleau Inn, in Alpine, NY

A bed and breakfast in the Finger Lakes, near Watkins Glen.

  • "Suttree"

A novel by Cormac McCarthy (and here are more books recommended by Sandie).
