Definitions:

Tower

CDs are stored in a vertical column, with cds fitting into horizontal slots.

Carousel

Essentially, multiple towers aranged in one unit that rotates on a lazy susan base.

DiscView

CDs as painting -- wall mounted displays of cds. Modular, so capacity is limited only by available wall space.

Holds 3x3 cds in a frame

Home CD Storage

A swing-out picture frame that stores CDs behind a painting. Maximum capacity 90.

CD Master Linx

This system is based a cube where the 6 sides are snap in cds, and then the inside of the cube can hold a dozen or so more discs. CD storage as legos.

Throw away your jewel cases

(The cds go in plastic envelopes, which can also hold the booklets. The envelopes are available for purchase separately, so some of the other flip trays and drawers on this page could be used for this kind of solution.)

Not only jewel case-less, but cylindrical, so there's no place to keep the booklets (these products are probably more for CD-ROMs but it might be the right solution for somebody's music storage needs). Also, most of them have a pushbutten retrieval system, kind of cool.

Modular, steel drawer system. Each 37.5 inches wide by 20 inches deep drawer holds 270 cds. Two drawer and three drawer units are available. The system is stackable, and the company offers various other modular components, including a 2-door cabinet with the same footprint that is tall enough for vinyl. One advantage of this system is that the drawers can be locked, and since it's a substantial piece of furniture, it should keep your collection safe from the casual thief.

Russ Bassett

The momma of all cd storage -- Gemtrac Pull-Out Shelving. Literally what it says -- shelves on rails so that they can be stacked in front of each other, with a cd storage capacity of 8,960 CDs in 25 square feet! They also sell drawer systems for CDs, cassettes, and other media; carousels; and steel shelves (984 capacity).

Bags Unlimited

This place sells corrugated cardboard boxes that hold about 100 cds in 3 rows. I have a friend who puts the boxes on end on a cheap metal utility shelf. It's inexpensive, and since 2 of the rows of cds in each box are held up only by the cardboard dividers, it's not extremely sturdy. But it is very portable - just put the lids on the boxes and your collection is ready to move!

Storage as sculpture -- very attractive towers, but expensive and max is 108 with jewel cases.

The Woods

A 180 capacity tower; 40-wide slotless, stackable, racks; a cd storage ottoman that holds 300.

CD Luma Tower

This is a bit different. Hexagonal carousels with an interior light, so it glows. Maximum capacity of 258.
