Jackie Perry Bodnar (UT90) writes: I married two years ago to a wonderful man named James Bodnar. I've been working at a pharmaceutical company called Incyte the last two years. They are in Palo Alto, CA. Incyte does high-throughput cDNA sequencing from thousands of tissues (including diseased and treated tissues) and then incorporates the DNA sequence information into a huge proprietary gene database. Other pharmaceutical companies pay Incyte subscription fees for access to the information which they can use for developing new products. Incyte has over 2 million DNA sequences and over 150,000 ESTs (expressed sequence tags, or part of a gene). Originally only 80,000-100,000 human genes were estimated, so it looks like there might be more. My job here at Incyte is to help increase throughput and decrease cost of the whole cDNA sequencing operations by implementing automation and developing new technologies. It's a lot of fun, and keeps me pretty busy. I enjoy working, but I am going back to school in about four weeks--I'm going to start a Ph.D. program in human genetics at U.C.L.A. Sept 26. I'm excited to go back to school, but I'm also sad to leave the work and people at Incyte that I enjoy. However, I've always wanted to obtain my Ph.D. and now is the best time to do it. Before Incyte, I worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in CA on the Human Genome Project for a year. In '92 I went on a study abroad program for 6 months to Israel, that was TONS of fun. I also went to Egypt and Jordan. I graduated from BYU in Utah in '93.
