I'm so glad you asked.
I've been reading mostly science fiction for over thirty years now. Yes, that makes me an old dude. But I've read and reread a lot of books, short stories, and what have you.
This started as recreation and HTML practice. But it occurred to me that this could be used as a public service. In my years of reading, I've come across a lot of great stuff. And a lot of garbage. It seemed to me I could save people a lot of time by telling them which books are worth their while to read, and which are a total waste. So that's what I set out to do.
It's not as easy as that, however. Unfortunately, I've found that to be a conscientious reviewer, one must explain why one likes or dislikes something, in case someone else disagrees as a matter of personal taste. For example, I'm not big on fantasy. But many are. So if I don't like something because it has "too much fantasy", I need to explain that for those who like fantasy a lot. (Actually, I do like fantasy. Some kinds. And in moderation.)
So I've tried to be informative, and explain why I like or hate something, so to some extent, you can make up your own mind about it. But mostly, I'm trying to steer people to superior stories and authors, and away from trash. Ted Sturgeon is quoted as saying that 90% of science fiction is crap (and that 90% of everything is crap). So I'm trying to highlight the good 10%.
Everything in here is, of course, In My Humble Opinion. Feel free to disagree (like I could stop you). Feel free to feed me back ( click here ) with fulsome praise and offers of money. Complaints and threats of lawsuits will be given the consideration they deserve. If you know what I mean...
