The old current future history (mystory?).
The majority of this page was written over a year ago. For those of you who have been waiting in breathless anticipation to see what the results of all the deliberations below were (and for some reason you haven't just asked me in person), the answer is that I joined the TPP program at MIT and am working in the Joint Program for Global Climate Change, while also being the Graduate Resident Tutor for my old living group, Epsilon Theta. Ok, its been a long time since I updated this page. The last version was written while I was going through my Candidacy exam. In any case, I passed Candidacy, went on to decide to take a year off from Caltech but finished writing up my Master's thesis first, and am now at the University of Utah where I am busy weighing all of my options.
Option 1: I have applied to the MIT TPP program. If I get in, maybe I could return to MIT. I might even consider running for house GRT. In any case, I took 3 econ classes and a government class last semester, and am taking an environmental policy class this semester in order to get some preparation. (I'm currently working on an analysis of ethanol fuel policy for my policy course).
Option 2: I could return to graduate school, but staying away from evil nasty stinky chemicals that don't do what I want them to do. In order to prepare for computational chemistry I took some quantum last semester, and I'm taking statistical mechanics (painful, for someone who's last stat. mech. course was sophomore year) and a computational chem lab (which will be cool once the computers are set up).
Option 3: I could take my interest in computational chemistry and say "forget the chemistry". In order to prepare myself for potential computer jobs I'm taking a C++ course (and took a really lame Maple/C course last semester). But then Andy would laugh at me for succumbing to the dark side.
Option 4: High school teaching. I'm taking a teaching course this semester to explore that option, which will involve my teaching a couple of lectures at a local high school where I've been doing observations. This is only 4th because of the pay, and because it seems easier to go from random career _to_ high school teacher than vice versa.
Anyway, I'm living with my parents while I'm here, which is nice for the home cooked meals and TLC, but its still a little bit of a difficult transition from living with peers (but still superior, in my opinion, to living alone). I miss Boston and Pasadena a lot, but I'm getting to know enough people here that when (if) I move on, I'll end up missing Salt Lake too. Its a nice city.
So people should come and visit me! We have great skiing (in the winter) and hiking (in the not-winter) and there's lots of stuff to see in Utah if you've never been here before. Salt Lake even has a decent number of cultural activities (the Symphony Orchestra is quite good) (and the opera is supposed to be good too, but I'm not planning on going unless either Jeannie or Megan Nunez come out to visit. Hint, hint).
Now back to my homepage .
