My name is Marcus Sarofim (I've said that already, haven't I?). I was born to Adel and Leticia Sarofim on the 21st of December, 1973. On my first day of life I - what's that you say? You don't want to hear about my past in _that_ much detail?
Ok. I'll skip to the interesting parts. I lived in Belmont for many years while going to Belmont Day elementary school. I also went to MIT Day Camp during this time (its sad how much time I spent at MIT over the years, isn't it?), where I met Alex Stillman and Hugh Hynes. I then went to Milton Academy , and, conveniently enough, my parents moved to Milton at the same time. There I spent much of my time in the AV (Audio-Visual Crew) hanging out with Andy + Tom + Edgar + Megan + Andy W + Jeff + Rachel + David + Judith + Lu + I could list everyone else I went to high school with but that would take too much time. I also edited La Voz, the Spanish newspaper, did a bit of debate, ran some track, played some squash, and was in the youth group of St. Michael's parish Episcopal church. While I wasn't hanging out, I spent enough time studying to get into MIT.
My four years at MIT have been the best four years of my life to date. A large part of that was due to living at Epsilon Theta , a large friendly yellow coed fraternity (the house we lived in was large and friendly and yellow, that is. An abstract concept like fraternity can't be described with a concrete adjective like yellow, though that could be considered a matter for philosophical debate). Living with 30 friends in a small space taught me a lot, and to understand me you probably have to understand ET too.
While at MIT I was active in quite a few activities. I was President and Skinner of the MITSFS for a year, and held other interesting offices such as Onseck and Thunderbunny (don't ask). I miss having access to all the science fiction a proper geek could ever want. I was also an actor in the Shakespeare Ensemble , and I was even the last Coordinator in the history of the ensemble (the office is now named Secretary General thanks to Jenny James Buhr). During my stint as an actor I was Gonzalo in The Tempest, Chebutykin in Chekhov's Three Sisters, and Nathaniel in Love's Labour's Lost, as well as several roles in some scene nights.
I was also a member of the Alpha Chi chapter of Alpha Phi Omega during my senior year, and enjoyed doing service projects and fellowship events with my fellow MIT students. I also did some service with ClubChem, including doing Magic Shows for elementary school children. Finally, I was a member of the MIT Outing Club which ran hiking trips and maintained two cabins in New Hampshire (remind me to tell you the story sometime about Intervale - the cabin I helped rebuild - and Delta Oopsitsgone). Speaking of hiking, I feel incomplete without getting into the wilderness at least once every month or two. There is something special about being surrounded by trees and moutains and streams and Life that just can't be equalled by anything manmade. MattR has kindly set up a page with pictures of our camping trip (spring of 96) in the Adirondacks.
Well, no description about MIT would be complete without a pointer to the SIPB homepage.
