Results of Traceroute

A document that you can find at gopher://wealaka.okgeosurvey1.gov:70/00/K12/k12traceroute (this is World Wide Web-talk for how to find the document) explains how the Internet routes information from place to place around the world. Curiosity leads us to wonder how it happens from our area, in addition to learning how it happens from the observatory in Oklahoma.

This document shows the detailed results of running Traceroute programs between Jim's terminal at work (in San Francisco, California) and various points around the world. Note, among other things, that the first eight links are always the same: to Sacramento, California, (for example, USBR.BARRNET.NET) and back to Stanford University. From there, a couple of other links are then made locally (often in San Francisco) before going out onto the superhighway, where the next steps are often long ones: for example, the route to www.digicash.com (in or near Amsterdam, Netherlands) jumps from San Jose, California, to Vienna, Virginia, in a single hop. As we approach our destination, a few more short hops are usually needed locally to get to the right computer. Note in the examples that there is more than one long distance superhighway -- different connections are used through the same cities along the way to our destinations.

These examples link San Francisco to Seattle, Washington; to San Diego, California; to MIT in Massachusetts; to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; to Florida State University; to and from France; to and from the Netherlands; to Estonia; and then to Australia. Some unexpected routes follow the first examples: from San Francisco to San Diego, California, via Boston and New York; and to Japan via MIT and Washington, D.C. Jim's guesses as to the routes are described; if anyone has better information in identifying the routes, please write him at j.price@cpuc.ca.gov so updates can be made.

After the names of the connection points, their Internet Protocol ("IP") addresses are listed. After that are three columns of times, for three separate measurements of round trip travel times, in milliseconds. If an asterisk ("*") appears, the connection point's response was lost somehow in transit. Note in the examples that the travel times reported from intermediate connections are sometimes slower than the times reported from the destination -- the most likely explanation is that the Traceroute program makes separate measurements of the time to each point, so that our signal is just needing different times to the intermediate points on different runs of the traceroute program (and isn't actually making a single trip and making it to the destination before it makes it to the intermediate points.

If you want a MS-DOS version of a traceroute program to try out yourself, use your World Wide Web browser to get ftp://polyslo.calpoly.edu/pub/mdurkin/trtb01b.zip (or use your FTP program if you have one). To trace routes TO your computer, try http://lolita.laas.fr/divers/menu-divers.html or http://www.digicash.com/cgi-bin/traceroute.

To get to Microsoft's World Wide Web server, the first few hops to San Francisco are to routers in and near Sacramento (134.186...) and back through Stanford, from which connections are made to MCI Net for a hop from San Francisco to Seattle, Washington. In and near Seattle, other routers take a few hops to the right computer at Microsoft.

Does Internet use the same path back to get to us as it took to get to France? Lolita.laas.fr's on-line traceroute program shows that it's the same, with limited exceptions. (Note that it uses more local hops to get out of France than we needed to get out of Northern California.)

Let's go a little farther from the established communications links of western Europe -- the Estonian Schoolserver, in Estonia. Like the route to France, MCI Net takes us to Denver and Washington on the way across the Altantic, through Sweden and Finland into Estonia. As we get beyond Stockholm, the connections become slower and missed packets become more frequent. When missed packets occur in our actual communications, replacements must be requested, adding to the time required for those communications.

Let's explore the Pacific now. Deakin University in Australia is the home of the South Polar Times, which is on our list of lesson plan ideas. Our Northern California connections lead us to NASA's Ames Research Center, which may be using a satelite to route us across the ocean. Note the sudden step up in travel time after we leave Ames -- but really 0.2 to 0.4 second is a pretty fast way to cross the Pacific.

Sometimes taking a long route on the Internet doesn't actually take very long in time. The University of California at San Diego's InternNet is one of the sources on our list of curriculum resources. To get there, MCI Net took us first to Boston and New York to transfer to cerf.net, which then comes back to San Diego.

Since one explanation for why we would go to MIT to get from California to Japan for Academy One might be that MIT Press is a sponsor of Academy One and therefore might host it on its computers despite the Japanese address, let's try a different Japanese address. (Nanzan University hosts a gopher site with Usenet discussion groups.) Although we don't communicate via MIT, we do go through Denver on our way to Washington, which leads us through a few more connections to connect to Japan.
