Songs from the Bad Service Poetry Cafe

1. From the Bad Service Poetry Cafe,

"Ballad of the Strange Iteration" by Bruce Reznick

Now, nobody wishes to sleep with the fishes,
But dining on them is a thrill.
From roughy to sturgeon, not needing much urgin',
I'm gratefully payin' the bill.

But on this vacation, a strange iteration
Of dishes, it's just like a dream:
Our menu's been crammin with barbecued salmon
My stomach is swimming upstream.

Now don't judge me hasty, I'll grant that it's tasty,
And often I'll eat some down south.
But hunger's abatin', when you know what's awaitin'
At dinner to enter your mouth.

So at the next diner, I won't be a whiner,
A techer must learn self-control.
Whenever fish beckons, I definitely reckon
I'll find myself ordering sole.

2. First after-dinner song -- "Permafrost"

Original by Rodgers and Hammerstein ("Edelweiss")
New lyrics by Reznick and Sahner

Permafrost, permafrost, every summer it's heaving
Thermokarst, thermokarst, polyg'nal shapes you are leaving.

Underground ice is not very nice when you build above it.
Fairbanks town, falling down, tells the tundra to shove it.

3. Second after-dinner song -- "The ten days of touring"
Original traditional ("The twelve days of Christmas")
New lyrics by Reznick and Sahner

On the first day of touring,
The alumni gave to me:
Arlana, Judy and Lee.

On the second day of touring,
Prince William gave to me:
Two calving bergs,
Arlana, Judy and Lee.

On the third day of touring,
Glenallen gave to me:
Three grilled salmon,
Two calving bergs,
Arlana, Judy and Lee.

On the fourth day of touring,
The tundra gave to me:
Four flower blooms,
Three grilled salmon,
Two calving bergs,
Arlana, Judy and Lee.

On the fifth day of touring,
Sue Butcher gave to me:
Five husky dogs.
Four flower blooms,
Three grilled salmon,
Two calving bergs,
Arlana, Judy and Lee.

On the sixth day of touring,
Neil and Carl gave to me:
Six houses heaving,
Five husky dogs.
Four flower blooms,
Three grilled salmon,
Two calving bergs,
Arlana, Judy and Lee.

On the seventh day of touring,
Denali gave to me:
Seven grizzlies grazing
[Recitativo: Actually, this statement is correct when viewed modulo 4.]
Six houses heaving,
Five husky dogs.
Four flower blooms,
Three grilled salmon,
Two calving bergs,
Arlana, Judy and Lee.

On the eighth day of touring,
Alaska gave to me:
Eight mountains gleaming,
Seven grizzlies grazing,
Six houses heaving,
Five husky dogs.
Four flower blooms,
Three grilled salmon,
Two calving bergs,
Arlana, Judy and Lee.

On the ninth day of touring,
The Kenai gave to me:
Nine whales a-leaping,
Eight mountains gleaming,
Seven grizzlies grazing,
Six houses heaving,
Five husky dogs.
Four flower blooms,
Three grilled salmon,
Two calving bergs,
Arlana, Judy and Lee.

On the tenth day of touring,
Exit Glacier gave to me:
Ten rocks a-scraping,
Nine whales a-leaping,
Eight mountains gleaming,
Seven grizzlies grazing,
Six houses heaving,
Five husky dogs.
Four flower blooms,
Three grilled salmon,
Two calving bergs,

Thank you Judy, Arlana and Lee.

Oh Lord But It's Hard To Be Humble

(New lyrics by Jean Hahn)

Oh Lord but it's hard to be humble
When you're perfect in every respect.
Oh Lord but it's hard to be humble
When you're an alum of Caltech.

I look in the mirror each morning
And smile at the face that I see.
Oh rapture, I Oh glorious perfection
How lucky I am to be me.

To think that it might have been Oxford
Or Princeton or Stanford or Yale
That almost was blest with my presence
The thought of it makes me grow pale.

I know after Caltech there's heaven.
After all I created that plan
Oh Lord, but it's hard to be humble
But I'm doing the best that I can.

Uncle Lee Silver & All

(from Bob & Helen Henderson)
  Travelling song (from the "Brits").

The lyrics have been changed in this old English drinking song, about an
ancient grey mare who expired, unfortunately carrying too many passengers
on her back. She now haunts Dartmoor on lonely nights "When the wind
whistles cold !". We are not suggesting that the bus which carried such
distinguished Caltech Alumni should haunt the shores of Turnagain Arm,
but maybe a small commemorative plaque would be in order?

First Verse:
"Tom Pierce , Tom Pierce, lend me your grey mare."
       (All along,out along,down along, lee.)
"For I want for' ter go ter Widecombe Fayre"

Chorus:
"Wi', Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davey, Dan'l
Widden, 'arry 'awk, Old Uncle Tom Cobley & all - Old Uncle Tom
        Cobley & all !"

The new lyrics are as follows:-

First Verse:
Doc Silver, Doc Silver our problem's immense,
        (All along,out along,down along, Lee.)
'Cos you talk about rocks and we feel pretty dense,

Chorus:
With Arlana, and Judy, Danny Tomkins, and Uncle Lee Silver & all,
and Uncle Lee Silver & all !

Second Verse:
Professor, professor, wer'e filled with confusion,
       (All along,out along,down along, Lee.)
For we don't get the concept of Igneous Intrusion,
With Arlana, and Judy, Danny Tomkins, and Uncle Lee Silver & all,
and Uncle Lee Silver & all !

Third Verse:

Dear Professor, please show us some samples of loess,
       (All along,out along,down along, Lee.)
But we don't want to step in deposits of moose,
With Arlana, and Judy, Danny Tomkins, The Anderson's The Bryans,
The Erways, Dave Forgerson, The Groces, The Hahns, The Hendersons,
Fred Ho, The Jenkins, The Josephsons, The Kendricks, David Koons,
The Linds, Bob Long, Le Val Lund, The Millers, The Perpalls,
Bruce Reznick, Robin Sahner, The Turners, The Tysons, The Wilsons,
The Woods, The Wrights, ... ,
and, Uncle Lee Silver & all, and Uncle Lee Silver & all !

On Ilkley Moor Bah T'at

(from Hugh and Wendy Kendrick)
                   On Ilkley Moor Bah T'at
1.Where hast thou been since I saw thee?
On Ilkla moor bah t'at. (we'll call this the "chorus")
Where hast thou been since I saw, where hast thou been since I saw,
where hast thou been since I saw thee?
On Ilkla moor bah t'at, on Ilkla moor bah t'at, on Ilkla moor bah t'at
(i.e. repeat chorus 3 times)

2. Then thou wilt catch thy death of cold
chorus
Then thou wilt catch thy death of, then thou wilt catch thy death of,
then thou wilt catch thy death of cold
chorus 3 times

This scheme continues for another 5 verses, basically just changing
lines 1 and 3, but you can figure out line 3 once yiu know line 1. So
rather than taxing my (non-existent) typing skills futher, I'll just add
the remaining line 1s.

3.Then we shall have to bury thee

4.Then worms will come and eat thee up

5.Then ducks'll come and eat up worms

6.Then we shall come and eat up ducks

7. Then we will all have eaten thee!
