"Cinco De Mayo" by Big Green

Print out these directions and take them with you. You might find a pocket calculator and a pen/pencil useful too!

Special thanks to Jukin' Jay and bluebonnet for helping me refine and clarify these directions!

  1. 34°25.619 N, 119°43.682 W
    Set your GPS for these coordinates. These are the same coordinates as on the official Cinco De Mayo page at geocaching.com.
    Travel along 101 until you see the needle swing.
    Surprised? Fear not! There's no need to put yourself in mortal danger to reach this spot.

    Once you're there, count the number of bars overhead. Only count bars that run parallel to traffic.
    AA = number of bars

  2. 34°2a.bbb N, 119°4c.dd5 W ...where:
    a = AA divided by four
    bbb = AA times twenty one and two thirds
    c = AA divided by three
    dd = AA plus five

    Another spot not far from the freeway. When you find it, count the planks beneath your feet.
    BB = number of planks

  3. 34°2e.e23 N, 119°49.fff W ...where:
    ee = BB minus fifteen
    fff = (BB times fourteen) plus AA plus seven

    This one should be pretty easy. Just find a small wooden sign with a message regarding aviation. There are some numbers on the sign arranged like this:

    CD-EF.G

  4. 34°2g.hh2 N, 119°45.iij W ...where:
    g = G
    hh = CD plus EF
    ii = CD plus G
    j = D

    This is a very pretty spot on a clear day.
    Stand at this point facing the ocean. Directly below you and ahead of you is a small clump of mature palm trees. (Ignore other palm trees to the left and right and behind you.) In this general area, there are also several trash cans and signposts with signs that say "No parking sunset to sunrise." Take a walk around the area and count the "no parking" signposts and trash cans. Note that some of them are on the other side of the road.

    H = number of palm trees
    I = number of trash cans
    J = number of "no parking" signposts

    Almost there!

  5. 34°2k.nn7 N, 119°4m.ppp W ...where:
    k = I
    m = H
    nn = (J minus one) times eleven
    ppp = AA plus BB plus JIH plus EGH plus ten

    (Don't forget the "plus ten" when you do your calculation!)

    The coordinates should be in a park not far from the starting point. This is the actual cache site! You will be rewarded with a Rubbermaid box of goodies and a spectacular view. The cache site is visible from nearby, and there's often a lot of traffic, so be discreet, and when you re-hide the cache, make sure it's not visible to passers by.

Enjoy!
