My Hobbies

Outside of work, I'm involved with:

I really want to get back into: I used to be involved with: When I'm not doing that stuff, I watch entirely too much TV. My current favorite shows are Friends (also), Alias, the Practice, Crossing Jordan, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, 24, the West Wing, Law and Order, CSI, and the Agency. Oh yeah, and how could I forget "Iron Chef"? And some shows from the past: Mad About You, Newsradio. Spin City, Birds of Prey. As I said, too much TV. Of course, as much as I like these shows, they still can never replace the best television on television.

7/31/02 - I think I'll start collecting quotations. Here are a couple, mostly from TV and movies, that I kind of like:

On Life and the Human Spirit

"We have each been given a life. What we do with it is up to us."
-Gandalf to Frodo, "Lord of the Rings"(J.R.R. Tolkien)
"My final two cents' worth of advice is to develop an all-consuming curiosity for things both exotic and ordinary. Read, observe, analyze, and become involved with a variety of interests. Study, practice, delve, probe, investigate and, above all, be flexible. Keep an open mind. The world is changing fast. Don't get caught in the corner ring. Keep moving and have fun..."
-Ward Kimball, interviewed in "Walt Disney's Nine Old Men"(John Canemaker)
"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."
-Lazarus Long, "Time Enough For Love"(Robert A. Heinlein)
"Running, one might say is basically an absurd pastime upon which to be exhausting ourselves. But if you can find meaning in the kind of running you have to do to stay on this team, chances are you can find meaning in another absurd pastime: Life."
-Bill Bowerman(Donald Sutherland), Without Limits (writers Robert Towne and Kenny Moore)
"I don't want to win unless I know I've done my best, and the only way I know how to do that is to run out front, flat out until I have nothing left. Winning any other way is chicken-shit."
-Steve Prefontaine(Billy Crudup), Without Limits (writers Robert Towne and Kenny Moore)
"I'd like to work it out so that at the end, it's a pure guts race. If it is, I'm the only one who can win it."
-Steve Prefontaine(Billy Crudup), Without Limits (writers Robert Towne and Kenny Moore)
"I can endure more pain than anyone you've ever met. That's why I can beat anyone I've ever met."
-Steve Prefontaine(Billy Crudup), Without Limits (writers Robert Towne and Kenny Moore)
Anton: How are you doing this, Vincent? How have you done any of this? We have to go back.
Vincent: It's too late for that, it's closer to the other side.
Anton: What other side? Do you wanna drown us both?
Vincent: You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton. I never saved anything for the swim back.
- Gattaca (writer: Andrew Nichol)
Superman: (to Darkseid) I feel like I live in a world made of cardboard - always taking constant care not to break something, to break Someone. Never allowing myself to lose control even for a moment, or someone could die. But you can take it, cantcha, big man? What we have here is a rare opportunity for me to cut loose and show you just how powerful I really am.
-Superman (voiced by George Newbern), Justice League Unlimited Destroyer(2) (Written by: Dwayne McDuffie)
Try not to take anything personally. People have different standards in life. Just because someone sees you all of the time but has never introduced themselves to you, or tends to only dance with their friends, or is standing around in front of the water station right in your way, does not mean that they dislike you, or that they even realize they are being rude by your standards. (This is a good rule of thumb to apply in general life circumstances as well).
-Dan Newsome

On Leadership, Principles, and Ethics

"If you're dumb, surround yourself with smart people. If you're smart, surround yourself with smart people who disagree with you."
-Isaac Jaffe(Robert Guillaume) on "Sports Night"(writer Aaron Sorkin)
"To get power, you need to display absolute pettiness.
To exercise power, you need to show true greatness."
-Napolean, but found in The Contender(writer Rod Lurie)
Principles only mean something if you stick by them when they're inconvenient."
- Laine Hanson(Joan Allen) in The Contender(writer Rod Lurie)

I don't seem bitter about anything, do I?

"And I don't think one should be too hard on oneself if the object of one's affection returns the favor with rather less enthusiasm than one might have hoped."
-Rodney Fraser(Nigel Hawthorne) in The Object of My Affection (writers Stephen McCauley(novel) and Wendy Wasserstein(screenplay))
"Life is pain, Highness! Anyone who says differently is selling something"
-Westley(Cary Elwes), The Princess Bride(writer William Goldman)
"Love is pain. Life is pain. You can't protect anyone from it. It's always going to get you."
-Dean/Vinny(Ray Liotta), Heartbreakers(writers Robert Dunn, Paul Guay, Stephen Mazur)
Buffy: Is she dangerous?
Warren: She's only programmed to be in love.
Buffy: Then she's dangerous.
"Made to be in Love" Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 5 (writer Joss Wedon)

Just kind of funny

"I thought this whole revenge thing was going to be fun, but you've done everything you can to ruin it."
-Dean/Vinny(Ray Liotta), Heartbreakers(writers Robert Dunn, Paul Guay, Stephen Mazur)
"The strangest thing is the people coming up to me doing the cheers from Bring It On. It's odd when it's young kids. But it's even stranger when it's grown men."
-Gabrielle Union, Maxim interview
"It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man."
-Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey
"To me, boxing is like a ballet, except there's no music, no choreography, and the dancers hit each other."
-Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey
"If you're a horse, and someone gets on you, and falls off, and then gets right back on you, I think you should buck him off right away."
-Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey
"The face of a child can say it all, especially the mouth part of the face."
-Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey
"Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself. Mankind. Basically, it's made up of two separate words -- 'mank' and 'ind.' What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind."
-Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey
Philip Henslowe(Geoffrey Rush): Mr. Fennyman, allow me to explain about the theatre business. The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster.
Hugh Fennyman(Tom Wilkinson): So what do we do?
Philip Henslowe: Nothing. Strangely enough, it all turns out well.
Hugh Fennyman: How?
Philip Henslowe: I don't know. It's a mystery.
-Shakespeare In Love (Writers: Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard)
"This is Unix. I know Unix." -Jurassic Park
"Do me a favor Rex, please don't mistake my anal retentiveness for actual affection."
-Bree Van de Kamp Hodge (Marcia Cross), Desperate Housewives (creator: Mark Cherry)
