A Side view of my basement, some portion of which is occupied by the 18-foot kayak under construction. Most of the strip-work has been done by this point, especially towards the front (left). The design is based on the Guillemot Large plan, by Nick Schade. But I've made some alterations to accommodate my overlong legs.
You can see a few of the forms, located every foot along the length. These are particle board (or plywood) sections defining the shape of the boat. This allows great freedom in shaping the final result. Quarter-inch-thick strips of Western Red Cedar are laid on the forms, glued to each other, and temporarily held by staples to the forms. The strips are cut (thanks to Toby's equipment) out of planks of 1-by-X cedar, then cove & bead shapes are cut into them with a router. After the stripping is complete, the staples come out, the outside faired, and the deck separates from the hull for removal of the internal framework, which is to be discarded.
