We spent a week in the Dolomites backpacking European style with our friends Bill and Carlotta. European style means day hiking from hostel to hostel, carrying only snacks and clothing. The hostels serve all meals and provide nighttime accommodations. In Italy these hostels are called "rifugi" (singular: "rifugio").
