README for NORMIX CD

HISTORY OF MY EARLY MULTIVARIATE MIXTURE ANALYSIS WORK

The enclosed file HISTORY.PDF describes how I came

to formulate cluster analysis as a mixture problem, with notes on

the referenced documents. It is a personal memo, informally written,

with reflections on the factors that influenced the discovery process.

The REPORTS folder is my personal archive of everything I have

written about mixture analysis.  I recommend reading Wolfe70,

Wolfe71b, Wolfe78, and Citations. Most of the rest is repetitious,

superseded by later work, and of historical value only.

REPORTS contains scanned copies of all of the materials

referenced in HISTORY.PDF, as follows:

wolfe60.pdf  - The mixture approach first presented in a

                     term paper written in 1960.

      wolfe63x.pdf - My master's thesis - relevant parts only

      wolfe63.pdf  - My master's thesis - the whole thing

wolfe65.pdf  - The complete technical report "A computer program

for the maximum likelihood analysis of types"

                     (USNPRA TechBull 65-15, May 1965)

wolfe67.pdf  - The complete technical report "NORMIX:

                     Computational methods for estimating the

parameters of multivariate normal mixtures of

distributions" (USNPRA SRM 68-2, August 1967)

wolfe68a.pdf - "NORMIX computer program documentation"

                     (USNPRA SRM 69-11)

wolfe68b.pdf - "NORMAP computer program documentation"

                     (USNPRA SRM 69-12)

wolfe69.pdf  - "Pattern clustering by multivariate mixture

                     analysis" (USNPRA SRM 69-17)

wolfe70.pdf  - Pattern clustering by multivariate mixture

                     analysis. Multivariate Behavioral Research,

                     5,329-350.

      wolfe71a.pdf - "NORMIX 360 computer program" (NPTRL SRM 72-4)

wolfe71b.pdf  - "A Monte Carlo study of the sampling

distribution of the likelihood ratio for

                      mixtures of multinormal distributions"

                      (NPTRL STB 72-2, September 1971)

wolfe71c.pdf - "Comparative cluster analysis of patterns of

                     vocational interest" (NPTRL STB 72-3)

wolfe78.pdf  - Comparative cluster analysis of patterns of

                     vocational interest. Multivariate Behavioral

                     Research, 13, 33-44.

      Zubin65.pdf  - A letter from Joseph Zubin.

Fleiss69.pdf - Parts of an MBR journal article about mixture

                     analysis

citations.pdf - Partial list of papers, reports, and books

                      citing Wolfe(1970).

NORMIX PROGRAM AVAILABILITY

Two versions of Normix are contained on this CDROM.

NORMIX21.ZIP   -  The complete Normix for DOS package in zip form

NORMIX21       -  The folder resulting from unzipping NORMIX21.ZIP

NORMIX22.ZIP   -  The complete Normix for Windows 95 in zip form

NORMIX22       -  The folder resulting from unzipping NORMIX22.ZIP.

Normix for DOS also can be downloaded from any Simtel.net

mirror site, for example,

<http://www.simtel.net/simtel.net/msdos.html> in the US

<http://www.iniaccess.net.au/simtel.net/msdos.html> in Australia

<http://mirror.direct.ca/simtel.net/msdos.html> in Canada.

There are about 89 such sites around the world, and the Simtel

collection is also available on CD-ROM from Walnut Creek CDROM

(1-800-786-9907) <http://www.cdrom.com>.

Just do a search for NORMIX in the search window that comes up.

The Normix21.zip file contains the source code, executable code, and

several sample data sets with expected outputs.

The Normix22.zip program is free for non-commercial

users. Registered users receive a copy of this CD-ROM and

E-mail or telephone support for 90 days.

The contents of this CDROM may be freely copied and

distributed.
