"I would rather discover a single fact, even a small one, than debate the great issues at length without discovering anything at all." -- Galileo Galilei

I am Vice President and General Counsel of Cryptography Research, Inc., in San Francisco, California, where I am responsible for the company’s legal affairs.  As an intellectual property specialist, I enjoy negotiating strategic alliances and technology licensing agreements, as well as managing the development and enforcement of the company’s intellectual property portfolio.

I am also a partner in PatentEsque Law Group, LLP, a Silicon Valley law firm.  I specialize in technology transactions (licensing, outsourcing, strategic alliances, joint ventures), as well as counseling clients on how to utilize their intellectual property (especially patents) as strategic business assets.  Some of my recent deals have included the licensing of a cryptographic security patent portfolio, the sale of an internet search engine division, the establishment of a pharmaceutical company joint venture, the negotiation of technology development agreements for an internet television company, and the outsourcing of a insurance company's IT operations.  In the patent area, I have recently worked on projects involving electronic commerce infrastructure technologies such public key cryptography, data mining, and distributed computing.  For more detailed information on my practice, click here.

Before that, I was Counsel at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom in Palo Alto, California, where I co-founded, and later led, the intellectual property transactions practice in the firm’s Palo Alto, California office.

Before joining Skadden Arps, I was an attorney at McCutchen Doyle Brown and Enersen, a California-based litigation firm.  Before that, I was in the Silicon Valley intellectual property practice of Weil, Gotshal and Manges, a New York-based law firm.  My first legal job was analyzing patents in the semiconductor industry (Nikon Precision Research Center).   Before becoming an attorney, I was a research engineer in the energy (Shell) and aeronautics (TRW) industries.

I am also a frequent speaker on technology law topics, and have taught Patent Law and Policy at U.C. Berkeley (Boalt Hall) School of  Law.

I was educated at the California Institute of Technology, where I received a Ph.D. in Jet Propulsion (think of "rocket science" or, more generally, aeronautics & applied physics) and a B.S. in Engineering and Applied Science.  I also hold a J.D. from Stanford Law School.

In my spare time, I recruit for Caltech, for which I have served as President of the San Francisco chapter, and on the Board of Directors of, the Caltech Alumni Association.  I also belong to the Caltech Associates.
